1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Ascot Tourer

Rolls-Royce of Derby, England, set up a manufacturing arm in America which was referred to, surprisingly, as Rolls-Royce of America. They opened shop in 1921, constructing the already-old Silver Ghost. In 1925, Rolls introduced the follow-up model to the Silver Ghost – the Phantom. In 1929, the Phantom II was introduced and the Phantom’s name was changed to “Phantom I” and it stayed in production through 1931.

The car you see here was built by Rolls-Royce of America and they are often referred to as a “Springfield” (which refers to Springfield, Massachusetts – where the cars were built). As it is a Phantom I, it uses a 7.7-liter straight-six that made about 120 horsepower.

What is great about this car is the bodywork. As far as early Rolls’ go this is one of my favorite designs. The body is by Brewster – the Long Island coachbuilder contracted by RR of America to build many of their bodies. It is called an “Ascot Phaeton” to give the buyer an aura of Britishness. It’s a five-seater with sporty looks and I like it.

The car has known ownership history from new. It was restored first in 1970 in New Jersey and is being sold by a European collector who had more work done recently. The car comes without an estimate but is being sold at no reserve. It is one of 28 Springfield Ascot Phaetons built on the Phantom I chassis. 1929 Bugatti Type 40 Roadster

The Bugatti Type 40 was the follow-up model to the successful Brescia. It was the “light” Bugatti, introduced in 1926 and built through 1930, making this car from the second-to-last year of manufacture. In all, more than 780 were built.

The engine was a 1.5-liter straight-four making 45 horsepower. This car is one of 42 built with Jean Bugatti’s “Roadster Luxe” bodywork. It is a highly desirable pre-war sports car design. This is one of four delivered new to Paris, but the identity of the first owners is not known.

The current owner acquired it in 1984 and had it repainted to match the color combination of Jean Bugatti’s personal Type 40 Roadster – black and red. The black wheels are a nice touch, too. This car has all of its original parts and is highly original. It is the 22nd Jean Bugatti Roadster built and one of only 13 that still survive today. 1929 Bugatti Type 44 Grand Sport

The Bugatti Type 44 was the precursor to the Type 49. It was built from 1927 through 1930 and this particular car has a somewhat interesting history. In total, 1,095 were built – one of the highest production totals for any Bugatti model. It is powered by an 80 horsepower 3.0-liter straight-eight engine.

The Type 44 was one of the first Bugattis built as a road-going touring car. It wasn’t necessarily meant for the track. This car originally had a Gangloff cabriolet body on it and was delivered new to Belgium. It bounced back and forth between owners in Belgium and Luxembourg four times before coming stateside in 1953.

It was restored in the 1950s and a tourer body was installed that had come off a different Bugatti. Then, in 1969, the car was bought by General Motors (naturally). Why not? Their purpose of buying the car was to put it on display in the Auto Pub – an automotive-themed restaurant in the General Motors Building in New York City. Shortly after moving the car in, it leaked some gas onto electrical equipment and went up in flames.

The body was destroyed but the engine and chassis were salvageable. A new owner had a new body built in the style of Bugatti by Wilkinsons & Son of England. The car is listed as having a “astonishing” number of original, numbers-matching parts. I guess it would be astonishing, considering the car once burned to the ground. The car is pretty and drivable. 1929 Duesenberg Model J-219 Cabriolet by Murphy

Well isn’t this a pretty car. This Model J was introduced for 1929 and it used a 265 horsepower Lycoming straight-eight engine of 420 cubic inches (6.9-liters). Top speed was about 115 mph – depending on what body was attached to it.

This one has a gorgeous cabriolet body by the Walter M. Murphy Company of Pasadena, California. It was sold new to a partner in the Standard Oil Company for an astonishing $14,500 in pre-Depression-era American dollars. It passed between a few owners and was restored for the first time in 1957 and again 20 years later and won Best in Show at Pebble Beach in 1981. Shortly after the dawn of the new Millennium, this car was sold to a Belgian collector and it has remained in Europe since. It currently sports Dutch registration.

Duesenbergs pop up often at collector car auctions but finding the right one can be tricky. You surely can’t go wrong with this Murphy Cabriolet. Yay, another Murphy-bodied Model J Sport Sedan. I’m going to be honest, I’m running out of things to say about this bodystyle of car from this specific coachbuilder. So instead, I’ll leave you to look at the car and marvel in awe of how the performance and glamour of this thing must have felt in 1929. Incredible, I’m assuming.

RM hasn’t published a lot description yet (which can be read here), but unless this car has some fantastic ownership history or some really cool story, I would expect it to sell for between $400,000-$700,000. You can see more from RM in Hershey here.

You thought Duesenberg week would have ended last week, you know… when the week ended, didn’t you? Well, I don’t know how to read a calendar. This is the final Model J that were featuring that was on offer at Pebble Beach this year.

It’s a Murphy-bodied car, the most prolific coachbuilder of Model Js. This one originally had J-204 under the hood, but was swapped for J-355 at some point. This car spent quite a while in a European automotive museum until 2011. It’s been freshened recently and is ready to cruise.

Purchasing this car would have been a great way to get your hands on a Duesenberg, relatively inexpensively, that has been out of the public eye for quite some time. The estimate was $500,000-$700,000. The catalog description is here.

Duesenberg J-270

1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton by LeBaron

This Model J has the LeBaron Dual Cowl body on it – my favorite bodystyle. This body was originally attached to a different chassis and engine than it is now. When it was first bought, it was wrecked and the chassis was junk. So Duesenberg removed the body, repaired it, and fitted it to a new chassis and engine, the one it currently has, including engine J-270.

One reason this car doesn’t really look like all the other LeBaron Dual Cowl Phaetons is because in 1937, the then-owner took the car to Derham and had them streamline it a little. There are aspects of this car that scream “1930s Art Deco” instead of “Big 1920s Touring Car.” The skirted fenders and bullet headlights are an awesome additions.

This car has been with the current owner for almost 60 years. It has been used regularly and never restored, just mechanically maintained. The two tone blue paint on the Sweep-Panel body (which is hard to see in the photo above) has helped create the nickname “Blue J” for this car.

For being unrestored, this is a truly impressive automobile. The pre-sale estimate was $2,000,000-$2,750,000. The complete catalog description is here.

1929 Duesenberg Model J Disappearing Top Convertible Coupe by Murphy

This early Model J was the first one ordered from Duesenberg as a chassis-only. It was purchased by the wife of a department store owner in Los Angeles who also owned a handful of Model A Duesenbergs. The chassis was shipped to California where it was delivered to the Walter M. Murphy Company in Pasadena to be bodied.

Murphy built the Disappearing Top Convertible Coupe to the owner’s specifications, including the white paint that covers both the body and the chassis (a somewhat angelic touch, I guess). A couple of owners later, the car was restored by Fran Roxas in 2010, having covered a mere 73 miles since.

Although the fact that we’re featuring a boatload of these cars, it should be remembered that some Model Js may never come up for sale. They have become museum pieces. Especially if they hold a certain distinction. This is a chance to own a very early Model J. A chance that doesn’t happen all too often. The price was estimated between $1,800,000-$2,400,000. By this point, you should know that every Model J Duesenberg came with a 265 horsepower straight-8 engine. If you’ve been coming to this site often, you might also recognize that the name “Murphy” seems to appear on more Dusenbergs than not.

So how about a little history of the Walter M. Murphy Co.? Walter Montgomery Murphy was born in Detroit, but the company that bore his name was based in Pasadena, California. Although the family business was lumber, automobiles ran in their lines as well, as Murphy’s father was an investor in Henry Ford’s first attempt at automobile production with 1899s Detroit Automobile Company, which failed a year later. The firm was reorganized as the Henry Ford Company in 1901 and eventually Ford was replaced by Henry Leland and it was renamed Cadillac.

The Leland and Murphy partnership would be a crucial step toward the development of the Murphy coachbuilding company. After WWI, Henry Leland founded Lincoln and Walter Murphy realized that these new grand cars would need magnificent bodies. The new class of Hollywood elite would be the perfect customer base, he thought, and set up shop as the Walter M. Murphy Company in Pasadena.

And movie stars did end up being a major part of Murphy’s customer base. Mary Pickford, Buster Keaton, Gary Cooper, Rudolph Valentino, Howard Hughes and many more all owned Murphy-bodied cars. Murphy did cars for Lincoln, Bentley, Bugatti, Cord, Packard, Marmon and more. They also bodied more Model J Duesenbergs than anybody else (about 140 of them). In 1931, Murphy saw the demand for custom-bodied cars dwindling and sold his interest in his company in 1932. The new owner could only keep it afloat for six months before it closed for good.

This car, with engine J-151 was one of the earliest Model Js built and one of the first two bodied by Murphy. It spent its life until 1985 with the family that originally purchased it. It has had two owners and a restoration since, being shown at Pebble Beach in 1986 and 1994, winning a second-in-class award in 1986.

I know, it’s been more than a month since we’ve featured a Duesenberg – can you believe it? As with most Model Js we’ve featured, this is also a Murphy-bodied car. We did feature another Convertible Berline (by LeBaron, which you can check out here) and if you compare the two you can spot a few differences but the cars are pretty similar overall. This LWB car was originally purchased by L.H. McCormick of Chicago, Illinois (and of the McCormick family) and this is how it looked when new. All subsequent owners (including the Blackhawk Collection) are known and the car is in show-or-drive condition.

The last time it was at auction was in 2011 and it sold for $704,000.
