RM in Arizona Highlights

RM’s 2013 sale in Phoenix, Arizona had some impressive results: the top sale was our featured Ferrari 250 GT Competizione for $8,140,000. Second place went to my favorite type of Shelby Cobra, a 1967 427 S/C. It brought $2,007,500.

There were a handful of other million dollar cars. Two of them were Ferrari 275s. First (first below) was a 1967 275 GTB/4 for $1,842,500. The other (second below) is a 1966 275 GTB, which sold for $1,320,000.

Our featured Delahaye 135 MS by Figoni et Falaschi sold for $1,540,000 while our featured Lamborghini 350GT failed to sell. Another of our feature cars, the Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster, sold for $1,320,000. Two more Ferraris rounded out the million dollar club. First, a 2004 Enzo brought $1,320,000. Then there was this 1954 250 Europa for $1,017,500.

Other interesting results included this 1953 Allard JR “Le Mans” Roadster which sold for $605,000.

And finally, this kind of lumpy-looking 1959 Lister-Chevrolet. It sold for $528,000.

Allard Woodie Wagon

1954 Allard P2 Safari

Allard built some sporty cars back in the day – the J2 being fairly well known. But the company also built some more practical vehicles, like the one you see here. And they are much rarer. The P2 was available as a Monte Carlo Saloon or as the Safari Estate. Both were two-doors.

While 11 of the Saloons were built, only 10 Estates were made. This one has a 3.6-liter Ford V8 underhood making about 85 horsepower. It spent its first few years doing duty on a sheep farm – so you know the utility side of things is pretty good. The restoration was completed in 1992 and it has covered 22,000 miles since – a good number of those in classic car rallies and events. It’s even been invited to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

This is a very rare car (with only 10 built, less are likely to have survived) and a very interesting one. The woodwork is exceptionally British – the rear tailgate is a three-piece setup that reminds you of opening a hand-made cabinet. A woodie wagon from the U.S. would be more about style and less about function. I like how this car blends both seamlessly. It is expected to sell for between $72,000-$88,000. Russo & Steele Monterey Highlights 2012

Russo & Steele’s Monterey Auction is the last of the Pebble Beach sales we’ve got to cover. Neither of our feature cars, the Fiat Stanguellini Bertone and the Apollo 5000 GT, sold. Top sale went to a 1965 Shelby Cobra 289 for $781,000.

Other interesting sales included a pair of Devins. First, the 1959 Devin SS for $165,000.

Then there was this 1957 Devin Triumph S “Gary Special” for $66,000.

Another special-like car was this 1962 Allard L-390 CC hillclimb car. The car is one of a few dozen Allard hillclimb specials built and it was actually built in 1948. But it was not registered until 1962, which is why it is listed as such. The competition car (CC) bodywork was added around this time. It sold for $66,000.

Two other cars of note are both rather recent. First is this 1999 Acura NSX Alex Zanardi Edition. If you want to own an NSX, this is the one to get because it is named after one of the greatest, most entertaining open-wheel drivers you will ever have had the chance to seeing. Only 50 were ever built and it sold for $64,900.

And finally this 2010 Superlite SLC Coupe is hand-built one-off supercar with a 632 horsepower LS7. It sold for $105,600.

Silverstone Classic Sale 2012 Highlights

The Silverstone Classic sale (held July 21, 2012) by Silverstone Auctions consisted of half road cars and half race cars. Almost all of the road cars sold, whereas seemingly half of the racecars failed to meet their minimum reserve. With some “results to follow” (as the auction house is trying to complete a post-auction sale), the top sale was a 2008 Ferrari F430 GT3 that brought $119,000

One of our feature cars failed to sell, the Satecmo Eolia. The Chausson CHS Prototype did sell, for $17,300. Other interesting sales include a 1964 DKW Munga – there’s some serious fun to be had with this thing for only $5,500.

This 1947 Emeryson Jaguar, a one-off racing special built by Paul Emery, sold for $22,500.

A similar looking car (and with a similar base) is this 1983 Kougar Jaguar. Kougars were built around Jaguar S-Type mechanicals. It sold for $17,000.

Another race car that actually sold at this sale was this 1970 Mallock Mk 8/16. Built by Arthur Mallock, this car was intended for use on the hillclimb circuit – even though it closely resembles a Formula car. This car actually won a 1600cc “B” Sport championship in its day. It sold for $7,800.

Two other interesting road cars were this 1948 Allard M-Type (top) for $43,400 and an awesome 1998 Renault Sport Spider (bottom) for $31,700.

The sleek, simplistic style of this 1954 Allard K3 calls back to Sydney Allard’s early trials cars that were built with little more than speed in mind. By 1954, however, style, comfort – as well as speed – were all combined to create this wonderful little American-British car. The cars were built in Clapham, London using a Cadillac V-8 making 325 horsepower. This car has a complete ownership history from new.

Only 63 were made, making this a rare alternative to just about any Triumph, Healey or Jaguar you’ll see at British car gatherings. RM doesn’t have it’s estimates on line just yet, but the last K3 that sold at auction as by Gooding & Co in 2009 and it went for $132,000. I would expect anything between $75,000 and $125,000. This car was for sale recently with a sticker of $125,000.
