I would hate to call a car that has been designed by one of the world’s foremost automotive design houses “bizarre” so I won’t. I’ll call it “Japanese,” as they are known for their love of quirky, boxy cars. Milanese design house Zagato created the aluminium body – which even has the signature Zagato “double bubble” roof, if only so slightly – while Autech, a Nissan-owned performance tuning subsidiary, was behind the rest of the car.

The car is based on a Nissan Leopard (a car America received as the Infiniti M30) and has an Autech-tuned 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 under hood making 320 horsepower. They also tuned the suspension and the frame. The entire car was built by hand and a production run of 200 was scheduled, although only 104 made it out the door.

They were very expensive when first released in 1989, but the price has subsided a little bit, with Coys expecting this to fetch between $38,000-$48,000. 1958 Coronet Convertible

Coronet Cars Ltd. produced the three-wheeled Coronet Convertible from 1957 through 1960. The British have had a thing for three-wheeled cars since, well, pretty much ever. Each has excelled in different areas, these three-wheelers, but few are attractive (okay, the original Morgans are pretty attractive). This one kind of is – especially when compared to things like the Reliant Robin.

It’s powered by a 328cc straight-twin located behind the seat. It’s rear-engined and rear-wheel drive. Somewhere between 250 and 500 were built – but only seven still exist. It is very rare and highly sought after – especially by microcar collectors.

No estimate is available because there really isn’t much of a precedent, as these don’t come up for sale all that often. $20,000-$40,000 would be a decent estimate, I guess. For more information, click here. And to check out more from Coys, click here.

A couple of weeks ago (or perhaps months ago, the days have been flying by) we featured a Dauer 962 Le Mans, a road car variant of the dominant race car, the Porsche 962. This is a similar idea, although the two cars look quite different – and they should, as they were designed by two different people.

Vern Schuppan, an Australian race car driver who has competed in the Indianapolis 500 and Formula One, designed this car as a tribute to his 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans winning 962. The engine is a 3.3-liter twin turbo flat-6 pushing out about 600 horsepower – basically lifted straight from the race car.

It’s a serious supercar. Sixty miles per hour comes in 3.5 seconds on the way to 230 mph. The chassis and body were designed and built by Schuppan (unlike the Dauer, which were 962s converted for road use). The price when new was $1.5 million. This was the first one built, chassis number one. Funding for the project was pulled shortly after this was built and only five or six were built in total.

This is an extremely rare opportunity to purchase an extremely rare car with unbelievable performance that still holds up against even the most modern of supercars. You’ll never pass another one on the road. To see/read more, click here. Unfortunately, Coys isn’t listing an asking price.

Dennis Fire Engine

John & Raymond Dennis set up shop as Dennis Brothers Ltd in 1895 in Guildford. Originally, the sold bicycles before building their first motor-powered tricycle in 1899. Four-wheeled cars followed in 1901 and commercial vehicles – beginning with a bus – in 1903. The first Dennis fire engine was built in 1908 and the company had found their groove. Passenger cars disappeared by 1915.

Buses and fire engines were their specialty and this 1930 fire engine features a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and it is in the livery of what is believed to be the original department, County Hospital Prestwich. There is a lot of attractive brass and many period fire-fighting items, including antique extinguishers, ladder and a trailer pump.

The Dennis company has gone through a serious of corporate mergers since 1972. At one point, it was split into three separate companies, with Dennis Bus and Dennis Fire being merged back into one another and re-branded as Alexander Dennis in 2001, the form in which they currently exist.

Fire engines are great collectibles – they usually don’t cost all that much and there are a ton of them out there. Dennis is a recognized brand name among fire equipment collectors and this one shows well and would be great for parades – the most common duty retired fire trucks serve. Ford P68

1968 Ford P68

This is the first car we have featured that is for sale, but will not be crossing the block at auction (at least, not yet). And it’s very exciting, being one of only two built by Ford for the 1968 FIA season, where new rules dictated a 3.0 liter engine for the Group 6 cars. This car features just such an engine – a 3.0 liter Cosworth DFV V8, making about 420 horsepower. But with a slippery drag coefficient of 0.27, it was capable of over 215 mph.

While these numbers are impressive, they did not translate into track success. In fact, the P68 program was a disaster with the car never finishing a race. This particular chassis was essentially destroyed during practice for the 1968 1000km of the Nurburgring. The damage was extensive to the point where the car was written off and not rebuilt nor entered in any more races. The other chassis was entered in about six more races. It scored pole position for the 1968 1000km of Spa but DNF’d due to electrical failure – this was easily the car’s best outing.

This chassis was entered in one race prior to the Nurburgring in 1968 – the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch where it did not start due to an engine mount failure in practice. After the Nurburgring disaster (where driver Chris Irwin was able to walk away), the car – or what was left of it – was shipped back to Alan Mann Racing where it sat until Alan Mann Racing shut its doors. The car was later rebuilt and entered in historic events including Goodwood.

After the disastrous 1968 season, Ford opted to develop a sister car called the P69. Only one of these was built. The P69 Spyder had an open cockpit and a system of hydraulically-controlled adjustable aerofoil wings. The handling was so temperamental that Jack Brabham refused to drive it and the car was withdrawn from the only race at which it was entered.

The Ford P68 does not have the glamorous history of its predecessor, the GT40, but it is a rare, awe-inspiring machine nonetheless. And it’s a lot rarer too. I haven’t the slightest idea what the asking price is ($1.5 million would be my starting guess, but it’s a complete guess). Coys is selling it on consignment. For more information, click here.

ATS GTS

1963 ATS 2500 GTS

Think Ferrari was the first Italian car company to build a mid-engined road car? Think again. ATS (which stands for Automobili Turismo e Sport) introduced the 2500 GT road car in 1963 with a 220 horsepower 2.5 liter V8 mounted behind the driver but in front of the rear axle. About 12 road cars were built.

ATS tried their hand at Formula One in 1963, quite unsuccessfully, retiring from four races and only finishing one: their home Grand Prix at Monza with drivers Phil Hill and Giancarlo Baghetti. When that endeavor failed, they thought “hey, we’ve got a powerful road car on our hands, let’s go road racing!” And thus the 2500 GTS was born. Power was bumped up between 245 and 260 and the car could do 160 mph.

Cardi Curara

1998 Cardi Curara

This car is very rare. As in, there was only one built. This Russian supercar is powered by a 5.4 liter BMW V12 making 326 horsepower. The styling doesn’t scream “supercar,” but more of “grand tourer” and with 326 horsepower, I think the latter is more applicable, although top speed is claimed somewhere around 198 mph (although I don’t see how).

When it was built, it cost around $185,000 USD. I’m not sure what it will bring in 2012, but it is relatively attractive and you’re going to be hard pressed to find another one. Plus, look at where the spare tire is stored:

And, for a car almost 15 years old, the interior is in excellent shape:

1913 AC Sociable

Autocars and Accessories Ltd. was founded by the Weller Brothers who initially produced a three-wheeled delivery vehicle called the Autocarrier. When they decided to sell it to the emerging motoring public as a passenger vehicle, the replaced the cargo box with a front seat and the AC Sociable was born.

AC produced approximately 1800 Sociables from 1907 through 1914. It is powered by a single-cylinder engine of about 630cc that sits below the driver who sits in the lone seat at the car’s rear. This car has a somewhat perplexing convertible top that can be raised over the passenger compartment. It’s purpose, one could suppose, would be to block the sun – as it does not reach the small half-windshield, therefore not really protecting anyone from the elements.

Curiously, it also obscures the vision of the driver. This picture:

shows that, perhaps if the correct height, the operator could see through the porthole window to drive (assuming the passengers aren’t large enough to cover it up), but their vision is still quite limited. It’s an interesting car, no doubt. But it also showcases that we’ve come a long way so far as ergonomics are concerned.

Jaguar XKR Silverstone

The Jaguar XK introduced in 1996 was a major design leap forward for Jaguar. These cars still look fresh today and this limited edition Silverstone edition stands out above the rest. It’s striking Platinum paint with silver “Detroit” wheels and seemingly colorless front lights really make it look like a bullet.

This car features a 4.0 liter V8 making 370 horsepower. It has special Brembo brakes and a custom Silverstone-only interior. This is one of 25 Silverstones delivered to Germany and one of only 563 Silverstones built.

This is a late-model collectible that may never be worth it’s weight in gold, but it has low miles and is very clean and will draw glances wherever it goes. Coys expects it to sell for between $51,000 and $58,000 – which is significantly more than any run-of-the-mill used XKR.
