If you’ve been following recent trends with regards to cars coming to auction, you might think this car is part of the liquidation of the Maranello Rosso Collection. And you’d be right. It’s a pretty car, this racer. It was used in both hillclimbs and on circuits.

The SE04 was Abarth’s first multi-tubular chassis and it used a Fiat-based 982cc straight-four making 105 horsepower at a wailing 8,000 rpm. It might not seem like a lot of power for a race car – even in 1966, but it weighs practically nothing and has a power-to-weight ratio of around 10 pounds per horsepower. It had a top end north of 130 mph.

This car was campaigned around Italy by privateers in various hillclimbs, winning here and there. Fabrizio Violati acquired the car around 1980 and added it to his fantastic collection of rare Abarths. It’s pretty cool and somewhere around 50 were made. Welcome to our July 2014 auction rundown, beginning with Artcurial’s 2014 Le Mans sale. The top sale was this 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL for $1,505,502.

Our feature cars all sold, with the Jaguar Buetler Prototype leading the way and smashing its estimate, selling for $217,162. Both other cars, the D.B. HBR5 and the Koenig Testarossa, sold for $160,860 each. Interesting cars were topped by this 1966 Fiat 1500 GT Barchetta by Ghia for $96,516. Check out full results here.

One of the coolest parts of owning a classic commercial vehicle is that it is probably pretty easy to get it cast in a movie set sometime in the past. This thing looks like it drove straight out of the flashback scenes in The Godfather Part II. It’s amazing how beautiful old trucks can be. There are new cars out now that don’t have this much style. It’s all in the details.

The Fiat 18P was built between 1915 and 1920. They are powered by a 4.4-liter straight-four. Only 6,354 were built – many of which were for the Italian Army. This one was acquired by Banfield as a chassis and restored as a box van. It should sell for between $37,000-$51,000. Click here for more.

 1922 AEC S-Type Open Top Double Deck Bus

AEC is known as the double-decker bus company. Their Routemaster double-decker is one of the most famous of the type. But their double-deckers go back to before WWI. The S-Type was built between 1920 and 1927, with 849 (double-deckers) built for the London General Omnibus Company – for which this example was built.

The engine is a 35 horsepower 5.1-liter straight-four and it is said that this was as good as public transport got in London back in the day. It can transport up to 54 people – 26 inside and 28 up top in the weather.

This is thought to be one of only two S-Type double-deckers in existence. And it had a really cool story, which you can read more of here. The price? $130,000-$150,000.

Fiat Station Bus

A station bus is exactly what it sounds like: a bus used at train stations. This is essentially a larger, more luxurious version of the fairly common Ford Model T Depot Hack. They moved people and some luggage around the train station or took people to and from.

The Tipo 2 was new for 1910 with the 2B introduced in 1912. It uses a 2.8-liter straight-four and was in production through 1921. The 2B could be had as a road car or a light commercial – as you see here. This example was bodied in London and can carry 10 people. It’s very nice. It should sell for between $51,000-$67,000.  1915 Peerless TC4 4-Ton Open Back

This sale from Bonhams includes quite a number of really awesome commercial vehicles. I don’t have enough time to feature them individually, but because they’re so cool (and you so rarely see them at auction), I thought I’d do two posts that cover the coolest among them (which is pretty much all of them).

This truck is from one of America’s premier luxury car manufacturers. They started building trucks in 1911 and the U.S. Army loved them. The British government bought 12,000 of them between 1915 and 1918, during the First World War. This thing uses a 6.8-liter four-cylinder and was in service with the British government until 1956. It’s beautiful. And it should sell for between $34,000-$42,000. Click here for more.

Fiat 8V by Ghia

The Fiat 8V was a short-lived sports car built by Fiat in the early-1950s. It was the first purpose-built sports car by the company and very few were made. Many of the cars had custom bodywork from Zagato, Vignale, and Ghia. Only about 1/3 of the cars had Fiat-designed bodies on them.

The car gets its name from the V-8 engine underhood. Ford had copyrighted the “V8” name, so Fiat just put the digit in front of the letter and called it a day. The engine is a 2.0-liter making 115 horsepower and that power took the 8V to competition victories in the 2-liter class all over Europe. Even though the cars were only built from 1952-1954, the 8V would win the Italian 2-liter GT championship every year through 1959.

This car was actually sold new to Ghia so they could build a body for it. Ghia has a strong association with the 8V as they were responsible for the eight legendary “Supersonic” cars with remarkable jet age bodies. The car you see here is the only non-Supersonic 8V bodied by Ghia. The car came stateside in 1957 and was restored in the 1990s.

It has competed in the biggest concours around the world including Pebble Beach and Ville D’Este. It is one of only 114 8Vs built and the only Ghia-bodied car without Supersonic coachwork. First up, we head to Paris for a sale from Osenat. I wasn’t able to feature anything from this sale, but wanted to feature this 1935 Hotchkiss 411 Cabourg. It sold for $17,800.

Next up was H&H’s sale at the Imperial War Museum. The top sale there was this 1956 Bentley S1 Continental Fastback. It brought $498,900.

Cool cars were topped by our feature cars: the Argyll sold for $56,250 and the Briton failed to sell. Next up was this 1910 Renault AX Tourer for $36,000.

And finally, a weird one: a 1965 A.K.S. Special. These kit cars were made by Auto Kraft Shells in England during the 1950s and 1960s and this one is based on a Triumph Spitfire. It sold for $5,080. Click here for full results.

Artcurial’s October sale had some big numbers. The top sale was this 1962 Maserati 3500 GTI Cabriolet by Vignale for $704,972.

Our featured Lamborghini LM002 brought $125,669. And the Matra Djet sold for $67,432. Interesting cars were topped by this 1972 Alfa Romeo Junior 1600 Zagato Coupe which went for $56,704 (no links to the individual catalog pages as Artcurial had taken them down).

Moving on, H&H’s October 30th sale at Pavilion Gardens saw one of our featured cars (the Brough Superior road car) as the top sale. It brought $107,800. Our other feature car, the Mills Busy-Bee, sold for $15,100. The coolest other car was this 1924 Panhard et Levassor X46 Landaulette that sold for $32,000. Check out full results here.

And finally, Bonhams’ London-to-Brighton sale. The top sale was our featured Clement-Talbot for $967,458. Second place went to this very interesting 1902 Panhard et Levassor Type B1 12HP Four-Cylinder Rear-Entrance Tonneau by Labourdette. It sold for an equally-impressive $931,714.

Our featured Warwick failed to sell. The Ariel tri-car/quadricycle sold for $73,401. There was another cool three-wheeler at this sale: a 1904 Cyklon 3.5HP Cyklonette. It brought $47,710.

Our featured Georges Richard sold for $91,571. And the Lacoste et Battmann went for $123,920. One more cool car: a 1903 Winton 22HP Twin-Cylinder Two-Seat Runabout. That’s a decent amount of power for 1903 – yet another reason why Winton was awesome. This could’ve been yours for $172,173. Check out full results here.

Vignale Samantha

The Fiat 125 was Fiat’s large family car that replaced the 1500 and was introduced for 1967. It was available as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. But some Italian coachbuilders got a hold of it and built some two-door variants as well.

Vignale built the “Samantha” – a sporty-looking two-door coupe. It is said that the car was designed for Alfredo Vignale himself – as he wanted a luxurious ride to drive around. Underneath, the engine has been upgraded from the 125’s original 1.6-liter: it’s a 2.0-liter straight-four making around 112 horsepower. Performance is described as “spritely.”

It comes with a set of spares, but it is in fantastic condition. Vignale ended up building a few more – 100 in total, making this a very rare coachbuilt Italian sports car. It is expected to sell for between $23,500-$32,500. Click here for more info and here for more from Coys in Greece.

Bonhams Greenwich Concours ’13 Highlights

Bonham’s annual sale held during the Greenwich Concours in Connecticut is the first sale of an active June. The top sale this year went to our featured Bugatti Type 43 for $875,000. Our next highest-selling feature car was the Pierce Great Arrow for $243,100. Among interesting sales was this 1917 Reo Model M Seven-Passenger Touring car for $24,750.

And from the I-Should’ve-Read-The-Catalog-Closer File is this 1974 Bentley Corniche. I would have featured the car but I just glanced at the picture and assumed it was a Rolls. I was wrong. Now I’ll have to wait for one of the other 76 Bentley Corniche’s built to feature one. This one sold for $39,050.

We featured a pair of American Austins. They both sold for an identical $9,350 (each). One of the more unusual cars at this sale was this 1969 Fiat Michelotti Shellette Beach Car – one of only 80 built. It sold for $39,600.

Our final two feature cars both sold. The Mercer Series 5 Sporting brought $121,000. The ex-Harrah 1909 Mitchell sold for $39,600. And finally, one of my favorite automotive marques of all time was represented at this sale – it’s a 1911 Winton 17b Five-Passenger Touring and it’s big and beautiful and sold for $220,000.
