Wolseley was part of Vickers in 1913 and the mechanicals of this truck carry the Vickers name. The CR-Type was introduced in 1913 and competed directly against the Leyland “Subsidy B” truck we featured above.

It uses an 8.5-liter straight-four making 35 horsepower. This is believed to be the only surviving Wolseley commercial chassis, which makes it kind of a big deal. It has been “authentically” restored and presents a great opportunity for a new owner, who will have to pay between $47,000-$67,000. Click here for more info.

This sale from Bonhams includes quite a number of really awesome commercial vehicles. I don’t have enough time to feature them individually, but because they’re so cool (and you so rarely see them at auction), I thought I’d do two posts that cover the coolest among them (which is pretty much all of them).

This truck is from one of America’s premier luxury car manufacturers. They started building trucks in 1911 and the U.S. Army loved them. The British government bought 12,000 of them between 1915 and 1918, during the First World War. This thing uses a 6.8-liter four-cylinder and was in service with the British government until 1956. It’s beautiful. And it should sell for between $34,000-$42,000. Click here for more.

Thomas Tilling operated a very large horse-drawn omnibus service in London beginning in 1847. They built their first motor buses in 1911. W.A. Stevens invented a hybrid gas-electric bus and joined Tilling during the 1910s. That’s right, this thing is a hybrid.

This 1922 TS3A was a new model, replacing the original Tilling buses. The gas engine is a 5.7-liter straight-four making 40 horsepower (click here for some crazy technical details). The bus will seat 48 (22 inside and 26 outside).

Banfield rescued this thing from a scrapyard and began the restoration in 1972. It wasn’t finished until 2007. It is the last surviving example of a TS3A. If you’ve always wanted a red, London double-decker, here’s one of the first. It should sell for between $150,000-$190,000.

This pretty delivery van is from U.K.-based Crossley Motors, which was in business from 1906 through 1958. When WWI started, Crossley turned almost all of their production solely toward the war effort. The van you see here is an RFC Van – it was used by the Royal Flying Corps – although its build date of 1918 suggests that it could have been surplus from the get-go.

The engine is a 4.5-liter straight-four making 20/25 horsepower. The 20/25 model was the longest-lived Crossley model, being produced from 1909 through 1925. This example is very nice. It can be yours for between $47,000-$54,000. Click here for more.

White tires on a commercial truck!? Are you crazy? I love it. Garford was an American truck company based in Elyria, Ohio (near Cleveland), that began production in 1909. In 1925, the company changed their name.

This was a truck that Garford sent to Europe during the War. It uses a 3.4-liter straight-four. The Model 25 was new for 1919 and this one is a driver. It should sell for between $37,000-$51,000. Click here for more info.

DRA Special

Never heard of this car before? That’s okay, neither have I. But that’s because it’s a one-off special – not a car that ever entered series production. In fact, this car is made up of parts from many other cars – a number thought to be as high as 27!

The DRA (Doherty Racing Automobile) was built in 1937 by W.T. Doherty, a garage owner in Ireland. He built it to race in the 1938 Limerick Grand Prix. where he finished 8th, which happened to be a DNF. It also competed in the 1938 Irish Motor Racing Rally, where Doherty ended up 4th.

This special is built around a Riley Nine, but has bits and pieces from a bunch of other cars. The engine is a 1.1-liter straight-four making 9 horsepower. Mr. Doherty sold the car in 1945 and the current owner’s family acquired it in 1966. The restoration was completed in 1967 and the car has been parked for quite a while – meaning it will need freshening in order to be used. Diatto Tourer

Diatto began life in the first half of the 1800s building carriages. In the 1870s, they entered the railway carriage business and by 1905, automobiles had come to market. The car business started as Diatto-Clement, building Clement-Bayard cars under license in Turin. It wasn’t until 1909 that their own designs went on sale.

After World War I, Diatto turned upmarket and began selling very nice, innovative cars. The new-for-’22 Tipo 20 was the most-popular car they built. It uses a 2.0-liter straight-four making 40 horsepower. The model names were shaken up when a short-wheelbase Tipo 20S was introduced, meaning the original wheelbase version was renamed the Tipo 20A.

1927 was the final year Diatto actually built cars. This one was sold new to Australia and was bodied locally Coffey Brothers. It returned to Europe in 2013 when a collector in the U.K. brought it back and had it readied for road use. It should be in good road-going condition and should cost the new owner between $59,000-$67,000. Click here for more info and here for more from Bonhams.

A Beautiful Mors Roi des Belges

Emile Mors was a car guy. Why do I say that? Because he was one of the first people to see the benefit of auto racing and how it could both promote and innovate his business. He started his automobile company in 1895 and went racing in 1897. Veteran cars – those manufactured prior to 1905 – don’t come better than the one you see here.

And that’s because it’s a big-engined, big-powered car from a time when little one and two-cylinder runabouts ruled the sales landscape.The 24HP model was the largest Mors offered in 1904 and it uses a 5.5-liter four-cylinder engine. This particular car can seat up to seven people in the large, luxurious convertible body.

This car has known history since 1938 when it first entered the collector car arena. It has been owned by only two families since, and Michael Banfield acquired it in 1975. This car is offered from his collection – as is this entire sale. It is unmistakably the highlight of the collection, with its fresh (as of 2004) paint and refurbishment. BMW Hurrican

This is a strange one. It’s called a BMW Hurrican and I can’t tell you for sure whether or not this is actually a BMW. I mean, it certainly has BMW parts and a BMW badge – but there is little evidence anywhere that BMW had anything to do with its construction. As you can see in the photo, however, it is certainly welcome at the world’s greatest car shows, such as Villa d’Este.

It is said to be based on a BMW 1800ti, likely from 1964 – and a Ferrari 250 LM. Now, this car doesn’t have a pre-sale estimate listed, but rather “contact us” – but a Ferrari 250 LM is worth over $10 million. This car is not worth that. This is part of the reason it is interesting.

The story I’ve seen is that this car was built by a group of students (college, I believe) in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The engine is a 1.8-liter straight-four making 120 horsepower. It also uses pieces from a Volvo, Fiat and Jaguar. While the build of the car began in 1967, it didn’t finish until 1975 and it’s been an attention-getter ever since. It definitely looks better than the 1800ti it is based on. You can read more here and see the rest of this auction lineup here. May 2013 Auction Highlights

May had a number of sales in it, first among them was Bonhams’ Collector’s Motor Cars and Automobilia sale in Hendon. The top sale was this 1956 Bentley S1 Continental by Mulliner for $426,066.

Our featured Ansaldo and Bianchi failed to sell. Our featured OSI-Ford brought $29,029 and the Ferrari 612 Sessanta $153,309. The coolest non-feature car was this 1949 Bentley Mk VI Countryman Shooting Brake by Harold Radford. It sold for $89,836. Check out full results here.

Worldwide Auctioneers held their annual Houston sale in April and our featured Hupmobile brought $66,000. Top sale was a 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda for a very strong $489,500. You’ll have to check out full results on your own.

Next up was RM’s Monaco sale, where our featured Ferrari 275 GTB/C for $7,860,283. All five of the classic F1 cars we featured ended up selling, with the Brabham-Repco topping this list at $1,502,701. The Ferrari F1-89 brought $847,678. The Renault beat its estimate for $315,953. The Hesketh missed its estimate for $385,308. And the Tyrrell went for $246,597. The Bentley R-Type Fastback sold for $963,270. Ferraris dominated, the second-biggest sale was this 1969 250 GT Cabriolet Series I by Pinin Farina for $6,473,174.

Our other featured Ferraris all fared fairly well, except the 575 GTZ, which failed to sell. The 599 SA Aperta killed it, selling for $955,564. And the 575 Superamerica brought $300,540. The Maserati 450S failed to sell, as did the Aston Martin AMR1. Our featured Bizzarrini brought $755,204. The Porsche 959 Prototype sold for $655,024 while this 1956 Porsche 356 A Carrera 1500 GS Speedster by Reutter went for what, if it isn’t, has to to be close to a record for a 356: $1,155,924.

The Mirage M12 sold for way below its estimate: $115,592. The Lister-Jaguar “Knobbly” went for $1,618,294. And last but not least, the Alpine M64 sold for $431,545. Whew. We featured a lot of cars from this sale, but it was pretty awesome. You should check out the full results here.

Now onto another Bonhams sale: the estate of Ralph W.E. Cox Jr. in Cape May, New Jersey. The top sale was our featured Premier Racebout for $143,000 – way more than the top end of the estimate. The Ford Model AC sold for $88,000 and the Waltham Buckboard $12,320. Those are essentially the highlights, car-wise, but this 1929 Savoia-Marchetti S-56 is pretty cool and it brought $100,000. Motostalgia’s sale in Houston in conjunction with the Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance featured a Duesenberg that we had featured previously. But it failed to sell. The top sale there was this 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Cabriolet Continental for $335,500. You can check out full results here.

Coys’ Monaco sale saw all four of our feature cars sell. The Autobianchi Jolly brought $72,730. And the MCA’s went a follows: Rascasse V12 – $114,560; ALA50 –  $135,500; Centenaire – $211,200. See complete results here.

Next up, Auctions America’s annual Auburn Spring sale at their headquarters in Indiana. The top sale here was this awesome 1934 Chrysler Custom Imperial Airflow for $213,400.

Our featured Frazer Manhattan sold for $27,500. “Biggest Boat” award goes to this beautiful 1957 Mercury Monarch Turnpike Cruiser Two-Door Hardtop for $51,700. Check out full results here.

And back to Bonhams: their amazing all-Aston Martin (and Lagonda) sale. This thing is crazy lucrative for Bonhams with nearly everything selling (of course, our featured Lagonda Prototype didn’t). And selling for a lot. In total, 43 cars sold and all but five of those were six-figure dollar amounts. Four sold for less than $100,000 and the top seller was this 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mk 2 Volante for $1,273,284. What an event. Click here for full results.

And then more from Bonhams, who had a very active month. Their Spa Classic sale featured some really nice cars – the most expensive of which turned out to be our featured Ferrari 308 rally car for $835,163. The Hommell we featured did not sell. Check out full results here.

The biggest seller at  Mecum’s annual Spring Classic in Indianapolis was a 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 for $885,000.

We featured three cars from this sale and somehow they all ended up being drag cars from the 1960s. Neither of the Mercurys sold, but the Pontiac Catalina was this sale’s #2 seller at $530,000. Interesting vehicles were topped by this beautiful 1937 Diamond T Model 201 Deluxe Cab pickup for $58,000. Check out full results on Mecum’s website.

Finally, the biggest sale Silverstone’s May Sale was this 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT for $421,000-ish.
